This year has been very challenging for all students, parents and staff across the country as we have been faced with an unprecedented variety of decisions and anxieties in what have been strange times. More than ever, we are very proud of all of our students and staff for how they have coped. It is a testament to the strength and character of the school that Year 11 have still achieved some fantastic GCSEs.

The Hurst School is proud of students’ hard work and their resilience throughout the last two years that led to so many individual success stories. This year, following the cancellation of exams, grades were awarded through a process of teacher assessed grades, against a national standard and approved and awarded by the exam boards. The government is not publishing performance data for any schools or colleges this year due to the varying impact of the pandemic. This year’s results saw the school’s Progress 8 score increase once again, meaning that every child, whatever their ability, has made anticipated progress.

Jayne McLaren, Headteacher, said, “We are very proud of our Year 11 students. They have proved to be able and engaged young people with clear goals for their future. Their next step into post-16 colleges are possible because of what they have achieved so far, and we are thrilled to be able to share some of their successes with you. To be clear, these students achieved good grades in spite of COVID-19, not because of the extraordinary arrangements this year, and we applaud them.”
