School Governor

School Governor

The Hurst School is an aspirational school of just under 1,000 students. It enjoys a semi-rural location and makes the best of its large site and green surroundings.

It has a strong ethos and is driven by its values of ambition, commitment, respect, excellence and community. It was last rated “Good” by Ofsted in March 2019.

The Hurst School is looking for co-opted governors to join our governing body. As a governor you will be a volunteer who makes a vital contribution to the success of the school.

School governors have three main roles.

  • Governors ensure clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction.
The governing body helps to set long-terms plans for the school, decide where improvements need to be made and how to make them.
  • Governors hold the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and the effective and efficient performance management of staff.
The governing body looks at the quality of education being offered and ensures the head is doing everything possible to improve results.
  • Governors oversee the financial performance of the school and make sure its money is well spent.
Governors examine budgets and spending proposals to monitor whether the school is getting value for money and ensure the money is spent in the right areas.

The role would suit someone with a professional experience of the education sector or expertise in the finance sector.  We are looking for someone who has a passion for education and a desire to help the school achieve success.  We welcome applications from anyone with the enthusiasm and an interest to effectively challenge and support the school.

The governing board meets six times a year usually on a Monday between 6pm and 8pm.  In addition, all governors are asked to join one of the sub-committees which also meet six times a year.  Governors will also be asked to visit the school to undertake monitoring (around twice a term).  Governors have access to an extensive training programme through the local authority either in person or online and are encouraged to attend regular training sessions.

You must be 18 or over to apply and all governors must have Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks. If you would like to find out more please email clerk@hurst.hants.sch.uk for an application form.
