Film Studies will help students understand the wonderful world of Film. The course explores the skills needed to analyse and understand all aspect of Film and Film production whilst offering a broad range of critical thinking skills and media specific knowledge that can be applied across a wider range of study. Students follow the Eduqas course.

In Film Studies there are 3 Components. Each component explores a specific aspect of Film and which are as follows:

Component 1 - Key Development in US Film (35%) Written Exam. The US film industry is extensive and dominates the world of film. In this component you’ll explore 3 films from the US looking in-depth at the change in film over time, the change in technology and the difference between Hollywood and Independent Film.

Component 2 - Global Film: Narrative, Representation, Style (35%) Written Exam The Global film industry, although less dominant, still produces brilliant films.

In this Component you’ll explore 3 different films looking at English speaking films and films from different cultures.

Component 3 - Production (30%) Coursework. The coursework for Film Studies is the process of filming and cinematography. Students spend time learning about the production cycle of film and film their own short, genre-based, film extract. Students complete this process with an evaluative piece of writing, reflecting on the process as a whole.

This course prepares students for further study at A-Level Film Studies or Media Studies. It also provides a broad introduction to a range of careers paths within the Film Industry that students might wish to pursue.
