First Students Awarded New Music Scholarships
Back to NewsWe have named the first two recipients of its new Music Scholarship Scheme, an initiative designed to support promising young musicians in Key Stages 3 and 4.
The programme, launched in partnership with Newbury-based tuition provider Good Vibes Academy, provides each scholar with a year of weekly one‑to‑one lessons—an opportunity worth around £750. The scheme aims to help students develop their technical musicianship, creativity and confidence through specialist tuition.
Applicants were required to perform a piece on their chosen instrument as part of the selection process. After a highly competitive round of auditions, the scholarships have been awarded to Jonah Mean (year 9) and Daniel Stevens (year 10).
Jonah, an accomplished drummer who recently passed his Grade 1 Rock exam, impressed the judging panel with an energetic performance of Uptown Funk by Bruno Mars. Daniel, a self‑taught pianist studying GCSE Music, stood out for his musical maturity and dedication to improving his craft.
Headteacher Jayne McLaren and Head of Music Stephanie McAdam presented the awards. Mrs McAdam praised the standard of entries, saying:
“This scholarship highlights the incredible musical talent we have at The Hurst. Jonah and Daniel demonstrated real passion and potential, and I’m thrilled they will now benefit from specialist one‑to‑one tuition to help them progress even further.”
Daniel said the scholarship represents an exciting next step in his musical journey:
“Piano has always been a real passion of mine. Up until this point I have been self‑taught, so it has always been hard to know how to steer the direction of my progress. I’m excited to understand how to get better, as I would like to become exceptional in this craft.”
Jonah said the additional support is already making a difference:
“I have always loved playing the drums. I’ve been having lessons for a while now and enjoy playing in my local church. Having the scholarship means I get 1:1 tuition and I am making much more rapid progress. The savings have allowed me to buy a new drum kit which I am excited about.”
As part of the scholarship, both students will also take an active role in school music activities and performances throughout the year.
